Our leathers are created for us by a venerable Italian tannery that has been producing fine leather for generations. In fact, our tannery supplies two of Europe’s top luxury automobile makers their “upgrade leather programme”. Our leathers are top-grain, 100% aniline-dyed leather. We do not use split hides, corrected or pigmented leather. Leather thickness is generally 1.0 - 1.2 mm depending on application of seating component for stretching and tailoring the upholstery design and condition. The soft, supple “hand” of our leathers is immediately recognizable as luxury quality.

We are happy to mail you a physical piece of leather so you can hold it in your hands. Just give a call or email us. Also, if you don't see the color you want, just let us know and we can see if we can source it.

Fabric Information:

General: The upholstery fabrics we use are considered among the finest available. The fabrics, which are 100% wool or 90% wool / 10% nylon, are not treated with any of the traditional textile chemical process coatings. These chemical coatings are not environmental friendly and fabrics treated with these chemicals will generally fail the environmental textile tests for LEED 5 or 6 certification and LEED-CI emissions requirement certifications. Our wools are, of course, sterilized and UV-light treated to assure all harmful bacteria are removed from the raw wool prior to spinning and weaving. We are also assuring the fabric dyes contain no harmful chemicals.

The positive features of our Wool fabrics include the following:
  1. Wool is a 100% natural product and a 100% sustainable rapidly renewable content product. Wool is re-useable, recyclable and 100% bio-degradeable.
  2. Upholstery A-Grade Eco Wool (like ours) is very durable and Passes the following test criteria:
    • 50,000 rub cycles with the ASTM 4966 Martindale Test Method for upholstery fabrics.
    • ASTM E-84/ANSI2.5, NFPA 255, UBC 42-1, UL 723 Tests for and the CAL-117 Flammability Test for Applied Textiles 10993 - Home Furnishings.
  3. Wool will not only return to its original position after being stretched or creased, it will absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp. Its unique properties allow shaping and tailoring, making the wool the most popular fabric for tailoring fine garments and furniture upholstery. Wool is also dirt resistant, flame resistant, and, in most weaves, resists wear and tearing.
  4. An interesting property of wool furniture upholstery is that wool is breathable and absorbs prevalent indoor air contaminates therefore benefiting indoor air quality. Since wool can easily be cleaned with water and a mild wool detergent solution, it may offer the best of all furniture fabric upholstery coverings available today.
Fine Wovens: Our fabrics that we call “fine woven” are identified with the prefix FW followed by a color code. We are currently offering 4 colors in this selection. The Fine Woven fabrics are made with 100% wool and have a soft feel, a smooth, tight weave, much like a flannel. Our Fine Wovens are high quality wool fabric (hypo-allergenic) and offers very durable wear. Plus, it is “Enviro-Green” / LEED certified.

Soft Twisps: Our fabrics that we call “Soft Twisps” are identified with the prefix ST followed by a color code. We are currently offering 8 colors in this selection. The Soft Twisp fabrics are made with 100% wool and have a knobby-like weave, much like a Boucle weave. Our Soft Twisps are high quality wool fabric (hypo-allergenic) and offers very durable wear. Plus, it is “Enviro-Green” / LEED certified.

Frame Materials and Construction

Steel Frames: The frame is the structural beginning of any quality furniture piece. Most of our exposed metal frame designs are constructed of the highest furniture grade stainless steel. We use stainless steel because it offers a lifetime of value to our customers. It will not tarnish and it has an inherent quality of aging to an elegant and classic “soft patina character”. Stainless steel may be re-polished many times to restore the metal appearance to its original “new” appearance. Chrome steel plated frames do not offer these unique and superior qualities.

Wood Frames: We begin with the best quality hand selected kiln dried hardwoods. Most of our wood seating frames are constructed of European Beech hardwood harvested from certified eco-friendly forest plantations. This assures our customers the stability of construction necessary when building up a seating or case goods frame. We utilize tried and proven. Old World joinery techniques coupled with world-class precision cutting and forming machinery offering unsurpassed quality wood furniture frames.

We offer two sets of wood/finishes depending on the product. For the Mies benches, daybed and stool, and the Noguchi table, we off this selection of wood finishes:
.
For the wood plywood lounger, we are offering these three finishes.
.

Seat Suspension Systems: Our product engineers have developed a proprietary seat platform support system that is unique to many of our seating products. With advanced modern technologies in webbing support structure materials now available, we have developed a superior seat support system that supercedes the neo-modern “nylon strap support systems” and the “eight-way hand tied spring systems”. Unlike these old technology furniture methods of seat support that have tendencies to wear and sag, our system offers superior time and wear seat support.

Seating Cushions: Modern Classics has one concept in mind with our seat cushions – comfort. We use only the highest quality seating cushion materials available. We tailor specific polyfoam layer densities and resiliency characteristics to fine-tune each furniture design for the best durability and comfortable fit for people of all sizes. Some designs demand extra-ordinary cushion requirements. For example, our Le Corbusier Petit Confort design is meticulously fine tuned with a bottom support multi-layer HR polyfoam with an added Dacron wrapped feather fill top cushion layer.
